LOP Online Lecture by Dr John Read

September 20th, 2019|

The open pit mine Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for creating slope designs that are expected by the owners, management, the workforce, the regulators, and the public domain to be stable for the life of the mine. Economic requirements are always implicit in the designs, but in today’s world producing slope angles that ensure the workers in the pit are protected against death or injury have become additional moral and legal requirements. These factors require that the Geotechnical Engineer has a skill set that at a minimum: encompasses regional and site-specific knowledge of the geological model; understands the spatial and temporal distribution of the structural defects that are likely to affect [Read more]

Mine Waste and Tailings Stewardship Conference 2021

July 4th, 2019|

Building on the huge success of MWT 2018 held in Brisbane in July 2018, Mine Waste and Tailings Stewardship 2021 Conference – Towards Safe Mine Waste Management – will be held again in Brisbane 1-2 July 2021 (postponed from July 2020 due to COVID-19).  The MWT 2021 themes will be: Mine waste characterisation Mine waste minimisation Financial and social licence to operate Operational aspects and case histories Stability of tailings dams, and tailings run-out and impact Tailings dewatering and placement Innovative mine waste management, including integrated and co-disposal of tailings and coarse wastes Mine waste water balance and management Mine waste monitoring, surveillance, Emergency Response Plans and regulation Mine [Read more]

LOP II Brisbane Meeting (7-11 May 2019, Australia)

May 23rd, 2019|

The Large Open Pit (LOP II) Sponsors Management Committee Meeting #8 and LOP III – Open Pit of the Future Workshop and Discussion on Research Priorities was held in Brisbane (Australia) from 7 to 11 May 2019. Progress Reports by the current Research Project Providers (including Itasca, Geoapp, Golder, Piteau and SRK) were presented during the first two days. This was followed by a Workshop on LOP III – Open Pit of the Future and discussion on research priorities for LOP III. LOP Online Lecture by Prof. Renato Macciotta Pulisci

April 23rd, 2019|

A guest seminar by Professor Renato Macciotta was held on 12 April 2019 at the School of Civil Engineering within the University of Queensland (UQ, Brisbane) targeting "Uncertainty and Probability in Rock Slopes Stability Assessment and Design". The lecture presented an overview of sources of uncertainty in rock slope analysis (including Model Uncertainty, Parameter Uncertainty and Human uncertainty), and further discussed how can slope performance influence criteria for PoF and FoS. A copy of the lecture slides can be found here.

Guest Seminar on Uncertainty and Probability in Rock Slopes Stability

February 4th, 2019|

There will be a guest seminar by Professor Renato Macciotta held on 12 April 2019 3:30pm at the School of Civil Engineering within the University of Queensland  (UQ, Brisbane) targeting "Uncertainty and Probability in Rock Slopes Stability Assessment and Design". This lecture presents an overview of sources of uncertainty in rock slope analysis and design, available tools to quantify this uncertainty, and how these need to be considered when selecting acceptability criteria. It  will be part of the Workshop on Acceptability Criteria in Rock Slope Engineering that was delivered by Hoek, E., Lorig, L., Macciotta, R., Martin, D., Varona, P., Hawley, M. In Santiago, Chile, November 18, 2018. Professor Renato Macciotta [Read more]
